In this podcast episode on John 4:1-26, pastor Andy Davis walks through Jesus’s conversation with a Samaritan woman and shows how we should follow Christ’s example of one-on-one evangelism and apply it to our own labors in reaching the lost. In the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, Jesus invited the woman to ask Him for living water; that which is eternal life and the way to salvation. Shortly after, Jesus talked to the woman about her five previous husbands, proving that He had special knowledge of her and her sin. The Samaritan woman asked about worship and Jesus told her of a salvation coming from the Jews, which would result in true worshippers worshiping God in spirit and truth. At the very end of the conversation, the woman told Jesus that she is aware of the coming Messiah. Jesus responded by saying that He is the Messiah.

Jesus left Judea and passed through Samaria on his way to Galilee. He came to a well, where He sat down to rest. His disciples had left Him to go get food, and a Samaritan woman came to the well to draw water. Jesus began a conversation with her by asking her for water. He quickly turned the conversation into an invitation for the woman to ask Him for “living water,” which is eternal life. Jesus talked to the Samaritan woman about her husbands to make her aware of His special knowledge and her sin. She asked about worship, and Jesus told her of a salvation coming from the Jews that would result in true worshipers worshiping God in spirit and truth. At the end, He openly told her He was the Messiah.
